01.12.2018The largest diamond ever found in North America was discovered by Diamond Mines and Rio Tinto Group at the Diavik mine. The weight of the giant was 552 carats (110,4 gram's.)
The diamond was found in October in northwestern Canada, 150 miles from the Northern circle.
This gems has a unique yellow color and texture. A rule, do not crystal clear but not white diamonds are cheaper, but this is considered special.
The found diamond is almost three times the size of the previous stone-record holder in Canada. It is larger than the diamond De Beers, previously considered the largest in the group yellow diamonds (440 carats at the time of discovery in 1888).
The neighboring mines of Diavik and Ekati produce diamonds of very high quality, but huge sizes are not typical for them, the joint statement of the companies says.
Rio Tinto owns 60% of the Diavik mine, but Dominion bought the diamond from a partner an internal auction. Now the company is looking for a jewelry house to share and cut it.Dominion CEO Shane Durgin (Shane Durgin) said that the diamond is a quality gemstone, which means it is suitable for jewelry, but gave a few extra details that will help determine its value.
Yellow stones are usually sold at a discount compared to the top type IIA proteins, which can often be found in the best African mines. Nevertheless, high quality fancy bright yellow or fashionable bright yellow stones can be
sell for premium.
"It is very difficult to give a rough estimate. It all depends, again, on cutting and the resulting stone," said Durgin
According to preliminary data, this diamond ranks 7th in size of all diamonds, found in the 21st century. It made the TOP 30 largest gemstones in history. And the world's largest diamond was found in South Africa in 1905. It weighed 3,000 carats.
